Discovering Liberec in Just One Day

Visiting the capital of the Liberec Region can be quite an adventure. Liberec is a city that has a distinctly Nordic vibe: it is nestled in a scenic valley between the Jizera Mountains and Mount Ještěd, where you can find a television transmitter and a hotel designed by the architect Karel Hubáček. The locals in Liberec also seem to prefer ‘Nordic’ activities: they are passionate about mountains and mountain sports, and the surrounding forests provide perfect conditions for these pursuits. However, if you only have one day to visit, you might not get the chance to thoroughly enjoy them. Perhaps you will be like many other travelers who have developed a love for the city, returning frequently to Liberec in both summer and winter for its cultural richness, sports, skiing, cycling, or simply for family outings.

The most beautiful town hall in the Czech Republic

Are you searching for places you are sure to love? Check out the most stunning photo spots in Liberec. It probably won’t come as a surprise that one of them is the Liberec Town Hall located on Dr. E. Beneš Square, which is truly a sight to behold. This Neo-Renaissance building resembles the town hall in Vienna and was officially recognized as a national cultural monument in 2023. As it houses the city council, it is open to the public during office hours. You can explore the corridors on your own and admire the busts of renowned figures that are displayed in the niches along the main staircase. Can you identify them all? Among them is Liberec native and ‘King of Comedians’ Vlasta Burian, as well as the actor František Peterka, who was a long-standing member of the Liberec F. X. Šalda Theatre and the unforgettable Krakonoš from Večerníček and the Krkonoše Fairy Tales. In the peak tourist season, you can also join a guided tour that will take you through the richly decorated ceremonial hall and even allow you to climb the tower, which provides a fantastic view of the city center. From the top, Knight Roland, the legendary guardian of the city’s rights and privileges, watches over Liberec.

To the mountains and the zoo along Masarykova Avenue

The locals of Liberec firmly believe that, in addition to their beautiful town hall, they also possess the most beautiful street in Bohemia. This street is known as Masarykova Street, which is flanked on both sides by charming historic villas with lovely gardens. In the heart of this area, known as Zlatý kříž, you can find several impressive buildings facing each other. The former Emperor Franz Joseph I’s spa now hosts the Regional Gallery, while directly across from it is the North Bohemian Museum. A bit further along, on the original grounds of the Liberec Exhibition Centre, you can find the Technical Museum.

If you keep walking down Masarykova Street, away from the main square, you can enjoy a lovely walk through a linden tree-lined avenue that leads to the botanical gardens, the zoo, and the People’s Gardens, where trails that head into the Jizera Mountains begin. If the weather is pleasant, you can hike up to Liberecká výšina, which features a viewing tower and a restaurant. Don’t worry about the distance; it’s just over three kilometers from the town hall to Liberecká výšina, with only a gentle slope. However, if walking feels like too much effort, you can always catch a tram instead.
