As it houses the city council, it is open to the public during office hours. You can explore the corridors on your own and admire the busts of renowned figures that are displayed in the niches along the main staircase. Can you identify them all? Among them is Liberec native and ‘King of Comedians’ Vlasta Burian, as well as the actor František Peterka, who was a long-standing member of the Liberec F. X. This street is known as Masarykova Street, which is flanked on both sides by charming historic villas with lovely gardens. In the heart of this area, known as Zlatý kříž, you can find several impressive buildings facing each other. The former Emperor Franz Joseph I’s spa now hosts the Regional Gallery, while directly across from it is the North Bohemian Museum. A bit further along, on the original grounds of the Liberec Exhibition Centre, you can find the Technical Museum.
If you keep walking down Masarykova Street, away from the main square, you can enjoy a lovely walk through a linden tree-lined avenue that leads to the botanical gardens, the zoo, and the People’s Gardens, where trails that head into the Jizera Mountains begin. If the weather is pleasant, you can hike up to Liberecká výšina, which features a viewing tower and a restaurant. Don’t worry about the distance; it’s just over three kilometers from the town hall to Liberecká výšina, with only a gentle slope. However, if walking feels like too much effort, you can always catch a tram instead.
