In 2026, Czechia will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the entrepreneur and visionary Tomáš Baťa, who founded the globally recognized Baťa shoe company. This significant milestone is included in UNESCO’s Calendar of Anniversaries, and throughout the year, various exhibitions, cultural events, and themed programs will be organized, especially in Zlín, the modern industrial and architectural hub shaped by Baťa.

This anniversary will provide a fascinating glimpse into Czech entrepreneurship, architecture, and urban planning history, while also honoring the enduring legacy of the Baťa brand, which originated in Zlín and reached worldwide.

Baťa’s Zlín

A visit to Zlín will allow you to discover the architectural wonders of Baťa’s houses, the director’s villa, and the entire intricately designed Baťa production system, in addition to his memorial. It’s your opportunity to see many beautiful sights that will surely beckon you back.

Start your journey at the Baťa Principle exhibition located in building 14|15 of the Baťa Institute, which is home to the Museum of Southeast Moravia. Here, you will find the largest footwear collection in Central Europe, featuring everything from the small shoes of Japanese geishas to the giant boots worn by some of the tallest basketball players in the world. The exhibition delves into Baťa’s business philosophy, production practices, marketing strategies, and the contributions of Zlín Film Studios.

Continue your exploration at Building 21, famously known as the Baťa Skyscraper, constructed in 1938. This was one of the first high-rise buildings in Europe and comprises 17 floors, each designed to accommodate around 200 employees in an open-space work environment. A unique feature that stands out in the Czech Republic is the head office lift and the accompanying washbasin with air conditioning!

An impressive functionalist structure, the Tomáš Baťa Memorial, rises above Zlín. From its exterior, it resembles a gleaming crystal, mirroring the traditional layout of factory buildings. Inside, you’ll find a striking Z-shaped staircase and a model of the Junkers aircraft in which Tomáš Baťa lost his life.

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Tomáš Baťa’s birth in 2026, a new exhibition titled Dream City will take place at the Tomáš Baťa Memorial. This interactive showcase illustrates Baťa’s vision of a modern city, highlights his business philosophy, and focuses on his partnership with architect František Lýdie Gahura, who played a significant role in creating Zlín’s unique identity.

Don’t miss a trip to the Tomáš Baťa Villa, built in 1911. This residence was designed for Baťa and his family, serving as a relaxing space where he could overlook his factory operations. Nowadays, the Tomáš Baťa Foundation, which is situated there, offers guided tours of the villa, where an expert will provide insights into Baťa’s life, the history of the Baťa company, and the architectural significance of the building itself.

Zlín is also home to several other remarkable villas linked to the Baťa era and the city’s history. You can check out the Čipera Villa, showcasing an exhibition on interwar architecture from the Baťa company, or visit the authentically preserved Zikmund Villa, dedicated to the famed explorer Miroslav Zikmund. The functionalist Vavrečka Villa has also gained popularity, particularly for its La Villa restaurant, which has earned a distinguished Michelin star. Collectively, these villas represent a unique opportunity to delve into Zlín’s rich history, its architectural beauty, and modern gastronomy.

And what about the iconic Baťa houses, those charming brick structures visible from virtually any point in Zlín? When they were constructed, these homes represented a groundbreaking idea. Designed with gardens and traditional facades, they housed the workers of Baťa’s factories. Baťa was committed to minimizing employee commutes, providing them with residences as near to the workplace as possible. Back then, living in these homes was considered quite luxurious! Today, the Baťa Houses stand as a testament to Zlín’s heritage, admired from the outside as part of the city’s charm.

This historic waterway, initially utilized for coal transport, has transformed into a key attraction for the region. From May through September, you can embark on group leisure cruises along the Baťa Canal, enjoy sightseeing, and indulge in exquisite dining.
