Nelahozeves Castle dates back to the 16th century and is one of the few remaining Renaissance castles still standing in Bohemia. It is located in a village that shares its name, about 35 kilometers north of Prague, on the left side of the River Vltava. Right below the castle is the birthplace of the world-renowned composer Antonín Dvořák. The castle, which took more than 60 years to build, came into the possession of the Lobkowicz family in 1623. This was when Polyxena of Lobkowicz, born as a Pernštejn (1566–1642), bought it from the granddaughter of the original owner, Florian Griesbeck of Griesbach. In 1939, the Nazis took over the castle, and then in 1948, it was seized again by the Communists. It wasn’t until 1993 that the castle was returned to its rightful owner through restitution proceedings, and four years later, it became open to the public.
