Discover the Mobile Museum Celebrating the Fascinating History of the Czechoslovak Legions

LegiovlakThe Legiovlak exhibition, available from 31 March to 29 November 2026 at multiple locations in the Czech Republic, features 15 restored carriages that create a military convoy. These trains were used to transport tens of thousands of Czechoslovak legionnaires from 1918 to 1920 across Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The Legion Train includes carriages for field post, heating, medical needs, film, command, staff, armor, sales, tailoring, blacksmithing (restored in Slovakia), accommodation, and two flatbed carriages. Inside, visitors can explore accurate replicas of the original interior designs, see legionnaires dressed in historical uniforms, and view original artifacts along with hundreds of photographs describing the history of the Czechoslovak Legions.

The Legion TrainSince May 2015, the train has been traveling all across the Czech Republic, continuing its journey with support from the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Transport. However, the government resolution from 2021, which provided financial support for the project and the operation of the train, will expire this year. The Czechoslovak Legionnaires’ Association is now working on changing the project to a more affordable version, which will still allow the Legiovlak to function as a permanent museum exhibit with several trips around the country each year.

In recent years, the Legiovlak has highlighted significant anniversaries related to the Czechoslovak Legions and the establishment of Czechoslovakia. This year, it will also honor the current role of our military. Visitors can look forward to the permanent exhibition plus a special exhibition titled “Homecoming,” which describes how our legionnaires were transported by sea from Vladivostok to their homeland in 1919 and 1920.

Field hospital, staff vehicle and screenings of period films

Legion trainThe idea of a mobile museum dates back to the First Republic, when legionnaires used period vehicles to show how they lived during the World War, inspired by the effective educational strategies of Jan Amos Comenius. This concept was later adopted by the Czechoslovak Legionnaires’ Association, which acquired and gradually restored fifteen historical carriages from 2012 to 2025.

The highlight of the display is a replica of a fully armed armored vehicle that was used to protect the train convoys. The collection also features two flatbed carriages loaded with supplies, an armored Austin car, a sleeping car known as ‘Tepluška’, which accommodated up to 15 legionnaires for several months, a field post van, a cinema carriage that screens period films, a blacksmith’s carriage equipped with a machine shop, a medical carriage containing an infirmary, and a staff carriage for officers.

The Legiovlak will be completely accessible for free on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and on weekends from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Morning guided tours are mainly for school groups that book in advance. During the afternoons and weekends, the exhibition welcomes all visitors without needing a reservation. Guides dressed in period legionnaire uniforms provide an authentic experience and share the stories of Czechoslovak soldiers.
