Czechia Shines in Spain: Discover Why National Geographic Readers Named It One of the World’s Top Destinations!

The Viajes National Geographic Readers’ Choice Awards are some of the most prestigious travel and lifestyle accolades in Spain. Annually, they showcase the most captivating destinations, hotels, and tourism projects both locally and internationally. In this year’s fourth edition, the winners were chosen by readers, the online community, and editorial specialists from the magazine. This year, 14 categories were awarded, considering not only the allure of the destinations but also the quality of service, authenticity, and commitment to sustainability.

Success backed by long-term work
This special recognition highlights the increasing popularity of Czechia in the Spanish market, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the CzechTourism agency. They present our country as a modern, safe, and diverse destination, offering a wide array of experiences.

“This award brings us great joy and serves as proof that Czechia holds a strong position in Spain. This achievement is a testament to the excellent work from our foreign representation, which consistently enhances awareness of Czechia as a nation rich in culture, gastronomy, unique experiences, and stunning nature. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our entire team, partners, and media, who help us connect with new travelers,” says František Reismüller, Director of the Czech Tourist Authority – CzechTourism.

The award is particularly meaningful as it coincides with the 25th anniversary of CzechTourism’s foreign representation in Spain.

“I am thrilled that Czechia has received this accolade from the readers of the esteemed Viajes National Geographic magazine. It signals that the Spanish see Czechia as an appealing destination for their future travels. They are drawn to our blend of historic cities, beautiful nature, opportunities for active recreation, and increasingly engaging gastronomy. We are also delighted that some votes came from individuals who have previously visited Czechia and wish to return,” adds Markéta Lehečková.

Collaboration with Viajes National Geographic

CzechTourism has collaborated with Viajes National Geographic magazine since its inception in the Spanish market. Over the years, the magazine’s editors have explored not just Prague but many other regions and attractions across Czechia. These visits have led to a series of reports and inspiring articles that introduce Czechia to Spanish readers. A recent highlight includes a thematic project on traveling by car in Czechia, published last year.

Spain as a stable market with a taste for exploring Czechia

Spain stands out as a long-established, stable market. In 2025, nearly 280,000 tourists stayed in domestic accommodations, spending almost 790,000 nights in Czechia, with an average stay of 3.8 days. Most visitors traveled to Prague for their longest stays, but the Olomouc Region, Vysočina Region, and Karlovy Vary Region saw the longest visit durations. This trend suggests a growing interest in exploring regions beyond the typical tourist paths.

Spanish travelers have a passion for food and enjoy trying new dishes, frequently seeking gastro experiences during their trips. They are also drawn to cultural experiences, attending concerts, the opera, ballet, and even black theatre productions. Promotions centered on local UNESCO sites, castles, and chateaus further enhance their interest in Czechia. Additionally, there is an increasing curiosity about our natural attractions and opportunities for active tourism, particularly hiking or cycling.

CzechTourism has consistently worked to strengthen the image of Czechia in Spain through strategic media campaigns, collaborations with online content creators, and presentations of Czech regions at specialized events. During trade fairs like FITUR Madrid, important discussions are held with major tour operators and travel agencies—key players with the potential to attract thousands more visitors from Spain to Czechia.
