How a “woman of remarkable beauty” founded

Teplice SpaA remarkable event occurred 869 years ago in the year 1154 when the second Czech queen, Judith (mother of Přemysl Otakar I) established the monastery named “ad aquas calidas” (which means by the warm waters). Judith was described by contemporary writers as “a woman of remarkable beauty, with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, a courageous mind, and a passion for learning and literature, well-versed in Latin and politically savvy.” She was a strong supporter of construction projects and had the oldest stone bridge in Prague, known as Judith’s Bridge, which was the most impressive bridge in all of Central Europe at that time.
She was also responsible for a significant advancement in Central Europe by founding the monastery ‘ad aquas calidas’ (by the warm waters) in the Teplice area. The Benedictine nuns utilized the healing springs to care for those who were unwell. This initial organized use of thermal springs initiated the spa tradition in Teplice, making Queen Judith pivotal in the development of the oldest Central European spa. It is believed that Judith spent her final years in her cherished Teplice convent, where her remains were eventually laid to rest.
