Czechia – Germany: Šumava and Krušné Mountains

The historical trade route known as Goldsteig stretches across the stunning landscapes of the Šumava and Bavarian Forest regions, offering an extraordinary adventure for nature enthusiasts and mountain hikers alike. This famous path features three primary branches, with a notable connecting trail starting from Železná Ruda and traversing the highest peak of the Bavarian Forest, Großer Arber (1,456 m) to the picturesque little village of Prášily. Covering a distance of approximately 25 kilometers, this route guides you through breathtaking mountain vistas, showcases breathtaking panoramas from Arber, and beckons you to explore the lush Bavarian Forest National Park.
EuroVelo 13: The Iron Curtain Trail (EV13) is mainly crafted for cycling aficionados but is also a great option for hikers (spanning a total of 10,500 km). In Czechia, it winds through the picturesque terrains of the Šumava, Novohradské Mountains, and Český Les (along the border from Šumava–Podyjí–Morava–Dyje all the way to Břeclav), presenting a unique blend of nature and historical significance. As you travel, you’ll encounter an array of monuments, museums, and former border checkpoints.
Another captivating hike follows the ridge trail in the Krušné Mountains, connecting Boží Dar and Oberwiesenthal. This trek is about 12 kilometers long and ascends to Klínovec, which is the highest peak of the Krušné Mountains. Here, you’ll enjoy expansive views encompassing both Czech and German landscapes. Czechia – Poland: Krkonoše and Orlické Mountains

The trail from Pec pod Sněžkou that leads to Sněžka and continues to the Polish town of Karpacz is a favored route that merges high-altitude experiences with numerous cultural highlights. Spanning around 15 kilometers, this path allows you to ascend Sněžka (1,603 m), the tallest mountain in the Czech Republic, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding Krkonoše Mountains.
For those who prefer a more serene atmosphere, consider the trail through the scenic Orlické Mountains, stretching from Orlické Záhoří to the Polish spa town of Duszniki-Zdrój. This enchanting trail, approximately 20 kilometers in length, meanders through tranquil forests and gentle ridges, far removed from the usual tourist crowds. It also connects to local cycling paths, making it convenient for mixed cycling and hiking adventures.
The European long-distance E10 trail stretches from Rügen to Italy and is part of the European hiking trail network, providing a thrilling endeavor for those aiming to traverse the continent. The Czech segment of this route commences in Hřensko (Bohemian Switzerland National Park) and progresses through the Lužické Mountains, Bohemian Paradise, the Posázaví region, and beyond toward the Austrian border. This path is well-suited for seasoned hikers planning extended journeys with overnight stops.

This route, around 15 kilometers long, allows you to discover delightful mountain lodges along the way, perfect for stops to rest or grab a bite to eat. During winter months, this path is also favored by cross-country skiing enthusiasts.
Czechia – Austria: Podyjí and Novohradské Mountains

Your adventure from Čížov, through the Austrian town of Hardegg, to Znojmo presents a remarkable fusion of nature, history, and transnational collaboration. Over this 18 km course, you will navigate through two national parks: the Czech Podyjí National Park and the Austrian Thayatal. As you trek, marvel at the stunning views from the Hardegg lookout point that overlooks the namesake Austrian castle, culminating your journey in Znojmo, a historic town known for its cultural vibe and relaxation opportunities, where you can also indulge in exquisite Moravian wines.
The Hřebenovka trail represents the revival of the original long-distance hiking pathway, extending across various branches through the Jizerské Mountains, Krkonoše Mountains, Orlické Mountains, Jeseníky Mountains, and Beskydy Mountains, frequently crossing into Poland or Slovakia. This trail is perfect for both weekend excursions and longer multi-day hikes.
Another cross-border trail connects Hojná Voda to the summit of Mandelstein leading to the Austrian town of Weitra in the Novohradské Mountains. Spanning about 20 kilometers, this route meanders through a serene, often overlooked landscape filled with dense forests, picturesque viewpoints, and tranquil paths.
