Church of Our Lady before Tyn

This Gothic church boasts spectacular 80m high twin towers and can be seen from miles around, along with the Town Hall tower located opposite the building. The church was built in the 14th century and was the primary place of worship for foreign merchants visiting the city. The church has a massive association with the Hussite cause, and many pieces of history from this era can be learnt about when visiting this spectacular landmark.

Inside the church, one can see mainly decoration dating from the 15th century, with a Gothic stone pulpit and statues of St. John, the Virgin Mary and the Tyn Madonna with child, the latter of which is thought to be over 550 years old. The most impressive part of the interior is usually considered the canopy above the tomb of Bishop Lucian of Mirandola, which Matej Rejsek created at the end of the 15th century. There are also statues in the church created by such famous artists and sculptors as Jan Jiri Bendl and paintings by artists like Skreta – such as the main altar of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary and the altar of St. Barbora.

One of the most visited areas of the church is, without doubt, the beautiful tomb with a portrait of the celebrated astronomist and astrologist Tycho de Brahe, who worked at the famous court of Rudolf II.
